Tin Ceiling Backsplash Installation Instructions

Tin Finish

All finishes except tin (unfinished steel) do not require any finishing treatment. Unfinished panels should either be primed with oil base primer on both sides before installation and painted with preferably an oil base paint after installation, or clear coated with polyurethane or clear lacquer on both sides before and after installation. Stainless steel is highly recommended for backsplashes.

Preparation

Cover the wall where the backsplash is to be installed with ¼" thick plywood to secure the panels firmly in place. If installing plywood is not possible, you may use construction adhesive along with nailing of each panel in at least a few places with a strong backing, such as wall studs. Nailing to plaster or drywall will not secure panels and is not advised.

Installation

1. Butt factory edge of panels against the countertop and overlap panels working from one side of the wall to the other. Nail panels every 6 inches on the dimples of the panel.
   • Follow the pattern upward towards cabinets/ceiling as much as possible and position sheets so the cut edges are hidden in corners and underneath cabinets.
2. Trim exposed edges, including those underneath the cabinets, with a wood molding.
3. Seal seams by gently tapping them with a small wood block or the head of a wide-angled chisel. Clear caulking of seams and exposed edges could help fill in the gaps, if any. Caulk before final coat of paint or clear coating.

Cutting Sheets

To cut sheets use a set of tin snips, paper cutter, or metal shears.

To create openings for outlets or toggles use tin snips or a chisel to tap them out.

Maintenance

Clean with a mild soap solution and soft cloth.
